What to expect from a Krakow townhouse when you arrive

Most central apartments in Krakow sit in townhouses built between 1890 and 1939. They work slightly differently from a hotel and from apartment blocks elsewhere in Europe.

How the building works

Entrance. The street door is locked and opens with a code. Behind it there is usually a courtyard, then a staircase. Older buildings have no lift, so ask before booking if you have heavy luggage. Ours has one, running from ground level.

Neighbours. These are residential buildings, not aparthotels. Long-term residents live behind the same doors, quiet hours run from ten at night to six in the morning, and stairwell noise carries. It is the main reason parties are not allowed.

Utilities. Hot water and heating are central and always on, air conditioning is not standard in Polish flats, so it is worth checking whether a listing has it. Ours does, along with a washing machine and a dishwasher.

Rubbish is sorted into separate bins in the yard. Instructions are in the flat.

No, entry is by code sent in advance. It works at any hour.

Is there a lift?

Yes, from ground level, so luggage does not need to go up stairs.

Can I smoke on the balcony?

No. Smoking is prohibited throughout the property, including the balcony and the patio.

Are parties allowed?

No. The building is residential and the flat sleeps up to four guests, which is not the same as hosting a party.

What if something breaks during my stay?

Message or call the host. There is no reception, but the owner answers directly and lives in the same city.
