Krakow runs on trams. Once you understand the ticket system, which takes about two minutes, the whole central area opens up and a rental car becomes an expensive mistake.

The system in practice

Tickets are timed, not per journey: a 20-minute ticket covers most trips within the centre and a 60-minute one covers anything you are likely to do. You buy them from machines on board with a card, or in the transport app, and validate immediately when boarding.

Trams run every few minutes until roughly eleven at night. After that night buses take over, roughly every thirty to sixty minutes, and one of them stops by Podgorze Market Square a few minutes from the apartment.

The airport train runs to Krakow Glowny, the main station, and some services stop at Krakow Zablocie, a fifteen-minute walk from the flat. Journey time from the airport is about twenty-five minutes.

Ticket inspections are frequent and fines are issued on the spot. Validate before you sit down.
