Central districts compared

What counts as the city centre in Krakow

Almost every listing in Krakow calls itself central. In practice five districts sit within half an hour on foot of the Main Square, and they feel completely different from one another.

Krakow stays

The five central districts

Old Town, inside the Planty ring: every major sight, the highest prices, the most noise after dark. Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter: bars, food, synagogues, a fifteen-minute walk from the Square and loud until morning at weekends.

Old Podgorze, where this apartment is: residential, quiet after ten, the Vistula boulevards at the door, twenty-five minutes on foot from the Square. Zablocie next to it: converted warehouses, two big museums, cafes, almost nothing residential.

Grzegorzki, east of the Old Town: apartment blocks and offices, close to the main station, cheaper, with little reason to walk around in the evening.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which district is quietest at night?

Old Podgorze among the central ones. It is residential, so the streets empty out after ten while the bars are a bridge away.

Which is best for a first visit?

The Old Town or Kazimierz if you want everything at the door, Podgorze if you would rather sleep well and walk fifteen minutes more.

Is Nowa Huta central?

No. It is a separate district built in the 1950s, about twenty-five minutes by tram. Interesting to visit, not convenient as a base.

How reliable are trams?

They run every few minutes during the day, until about eleven at night, with night buses after that. A twenty-minute ticket covers most journeys in this area.

Do I need a car?

No, and it is a liability. Paid parking zones cover the central districts and the Old Town restricts traffic entirely.
