Four criteria that decide it
Night noise. Inside the Planty ring and around Plac Nowy in Kazimierz, bars run until the early hours all week. Podgorze, Zablocie and Grzegorzki are quiet after ten. If you are a light sleeper, this is the criterion that matters most.
Transport. Trams reach everywhere central every few minutes until about eleven at night. What counts is how far the stop is from your door and whether you need to change lines. Ours is a minute away with direct connections to the Old Town, the main station and the arena.
Daily supplies. Grocery shops are dense in residential districts and thin inside the Old Town, where the ground floors belong to restaurants. On Sundays most shops close nationwide, so a district with a small owner-run shop nearby is worth something.
Evening life. Kazimierz has the most, Podgorze has enough for dinner and a drink, Zablocie empties out, Grzegorzki has little. Match this to whether you plan to go out or come back tired.

Which area has the best transport links?
Anywhere along the main tram lines, which includes Podgorze, Grzegorzki and Kazimierz. The Old Town itself has fewer trams inside the ring because of pedestrian zones.
Where can I buy groceries late in the evening?
Residential districts have shops open until ten or eleven. Ours is a hundred metres away.
Which area is best in summer heat?
One near the river. The boulevards stay noticeably cooler in the evening than the enclosed streets of the Old Town.
Is it worth staying near the main station?
Only if you have an early train. The area around Grzegorzki is convenient and charmless.
How far is the airport from the central districts?
About fourteen kilometres, roughly twenty-five minutes by train to the main station or thirty by car to Podgorze.
