Poland is not in the eurozone and has a few rules that catch visitors out, mostly around Sundays and cash. None of it is complicated once you know it.

Krakow stays

The things worth knowing before you land

Money. The currency is the zloty. Cards work almost everywhere, including on trams and in small shops, and contactless is the norm. Exchange money in a kantor in town rather than at the airport, and avoid the currency conversion offered by ATMs, which is always worse than your bank's rate.

Sundays. Most shops are closed on Sundays under trading restrictions, with exceptions for a handful of Sundays before Christmas and for small owner-run shops. Restaurants, museums and petrol stations stay open. Plan grocery shopping for Saturday.

Tipping. Around ten percent in restaurants if you were happy, rounded up in taxis. Saying "thank you" as you hand over money is understood as telling the server to keep the change, which surprises visitors more than once.

The apartment is paid online in advance, so you will not need cash at the door.

Do I need cash in Krakow?

Rarely. Cards work on public transport, in shops and in most restaurants. A small amount of cash is useful at markets.

Are shops really closed on Sundays?

Most of them, yes. Small shops run by their owners and petrol stations stay open, and there are exceptions in December.

Is Krakow expensive?

Cheaper than western European capitals for food and transport, closer to them for accommodation in the centre during high season.

Do people speak English?

Widely in the centre, in restaurants and museums. Less so in small shops and among older residents. The host answers in English.

Is Krakow safe at night?

Yes, including the walk between Kazimierz and Podgorze. Usual city precautions apply around crowded bar streets at weekends.
