How December works here

The market fills the Square with wooden stalls selling grilled cheese, mulled wine, gingerbread and hand-made decorations. It is busiest between four and eight in the evening, when it is also at its best, because the stalls are lit and the square is dark by half past three.

Weekends in December are the busiest tourist period of the winter, and rates follow. Weekdays are noticeably calmer, and the first half of December is easier than the week before Christmas.

Getting back matters more in December than in summer. From the Square to Podgorze is a twenty-five-minute walk through Kazimierz, which is lit and busy, or twelve to fifteen minutes by tram until about eleven at night.

Dress for standing still. The market is outdoors and the wind off the Vistula makes it feel colder than the forecast.

How long does the Christmas market run?

The Main Square one is the main event. Smaller ones appear in other districts, including a small one in Podgorze.

Which area is best for market visits?

Anywhere within a tram ride. The Old Town puts you in the middle of it and keeps you awake; Kazimierz and Podgorze are fifteen and twenty-five minutes away on foot.

How cold does it get?

Evenings in December are usually around or below freezing. Layers, gloves and proper boots make the difference between an hour at the market and ten minutes.

Are the trams running late in December?

Yes, on the normal timetable until about eleven, then night buses.
