What is open when

Christmas Eve, 24 December. Shops close around midday or early afternoon, restaurants mostly close for the evening, and the Christmas market winds down early. Polish families eat the main meal after dark. Public transport switches to a holiday timetable.

Christmas Day, 25 December. Almost everything is closed: shops, most restaurants, most museums. Churches are full. The streets are quiet and, if there is snow, this is the prettiest day of the year to walk around the Old Town.

26 December, the second day of Christmas, is also a public holiday, though more restaurants open. Normal life resumes on 27 December, when the market and the museums are back to full hours.

Buy food for 24 and 25 December on 23 December. A kitchen turns those two days from a problem into a quiet break.
