What staying in Krakow really costs

Krakow is cheaper than western European capitals for food and transport, and no longer cheap for central accommodation in high season. Here is where the money actually goes.

Accommodation. A hostel bed is the cheapest per person, a private room in someone's flat next, then a whole apartment, then a hotel inside the Planty ring. For two people the gap between a hostel and an apartment narrows sharply, because apartment rates are per flat, not per person.

Food. Milk bars serve hot meals at a fraction of restaurant prices and close in the afternoon. Zapiekanki at Plac Nowy cost a few zloty. Cooking in the flat cuts breakfast to almost nothing, with a shop a hundred metres away.

Transport. A twenty-minute tram ticket covers most central journeys and costs less than a coffee. Parking a car in the paid zone for a few days costs more than a night's accommodation, which is why we mention it.

We are not the cheapest option in the city and do not pretend to be. For one person a hostel wins on price every time.

When is Krakow cheapest?

November, January and February outside the school holidays. New Year, May bank holidays and December are the most expensive.

How do I eat cheaply without eating badly?

Milk bars for lunch, Plac Nowy for late-night food, and the grocery shop for breakfast. Avoid restaurants directly on the Main Square.

Is a hostel much cheaper for two people?

Two beds in a dorm usually still cost less than a private flat, but the gap is small enough that the kitchen and privacy often decide it.

Are there hidden fees on booking?

Not here. No service fee, no cleaning fee and no deposit. Rates for three and four guests are higher and shown in the calendar before you pay.

What is the single biggest saving?

Travelling outside the peak dates, followed by not renting a car.
