First time in Krakow: the six things people get wrong

None of these are disasters, but each one costs a first-time visitor either money, sleep or an afternoon. They are also all avoidable in advance.

What goes wrong and how to avoid it

Booking a bar street. Addresses on Szewska, Florianska or around Plac Nowy look central because they are, and they are also awake until four. Check what is on the ground floor of the building before you book.

Leaving museum tickets to the day. Schindler's Factory, the Rynek Underground and parts of Wawel sell timed entry that goes days ahead in season. Booking three or four days out solves it.

Renting a car. Paid parking zones cover the centre, the Old Town restricts traffic, and everything you came for is walkable or a tram ride away. A car in Krakow is a cost, not a convenience.

Eating on the Square. Prices on the Main Square are double what they are two streets away, for worse food. Walk five minutes in any direction, or to Kazimierz.

Underestimating Auschwitz and Wieliczka. Each takes most of a day including travel. Two day trips in a three-day visit leaves you seeing nothing of the city.

Assuming everything is open on Sunday. Most shops are closed, museums are not. Buy groceries on Saturday.

How many days should a first visit be?

Three for the city, four if you want Wieliczka or Auschwitz as well.

Is Krakow walkable?

Almost entirely. The central districts sit within half an hour of each other on foot, and trams cover the rest.

Should I stay in the Old Town on a first visit?

It is the easiest choice, and the noisiest. A district out costs you a twenty-minute walk and buys quiet nights and a lower rate.

What is worth skipping?

The horse-drawn carriages on the Square, the amber shops aimed at tour groups, and any restaurant with a person outside handing out menus.

How much cash do I need?

Very little. Cards work everywhere, including trams.
