Podgorze was a separate town for over a century and only joined Krakow in 1915. It still has its own market square, its own church tower on the skyline and a set of sights that has nothing to do with the Old Town.

What to see, in walking order
Podgorze Market Square with St Joseph's church, a neo-Gothic building that looks older than it is. Around it, the street plan of the old town: low townhouses, workshops, courtyards.
Bednarski Park, five hectares in a former limestone quarry, with cliff walls left standing among the trees. Locals walk dogs there; almost no visitors find it.
The memorial sites: Ghetto Heroes Square with its field of empty chairs, the Eagle Pharmacy museum on its edge, and Schindler's Factory twenty minutes further, in Zablocie.
Krakus Mound, a prehistoric earth mound of unknown purpose, with the best panorama in the city from the top. Twenty-five minutes uphill, and worth it at sunset.

Is Podgorze worth a full day?
Yes, comfortably, if you include Schindler's Factory and MOCAK. Without museums it is a long half-day.
What is Krakus Mound?
A prehistoric earth mound about sixteen metres high, older than the city and of disputed purpose. The climb is short and steep, the view covers everything.
Where do locals eat in Podgorze?
Around the market square and along the streets towards Zablocie. There is a milk bar, a sushi place and a pizzeria within a hundred metres of our door.
How do I get to Kazimierz from Podgorze?
Over the Father Bernatek Footbridge, ten minutes on foot, along the river.
Is there anything for children?
Bednarski Park with its playground, the boulevards for bikes and scooters, and the climb up Krakus Mound, which most children treat as an adventure.
